Also in attendance was Steven Fan, who had worked as Tim's interpreter 15 years ago, and is mentioned on page 50 of the book. Steven's English was the best of all those in 8 factories. He had learned English at school and listened to VoA and BBC short wave stations (bad signal due to the mountains) and grasped this opportunity. Steven is now regional manager of a large insurance broker and his English is outstanding. Tim's Mandarin is superb, too.
